The aim of the society is to advance education in, and appreciation of, the art of chamber music, by the presentation of public recitals and master classes (tutored events).
4strings88keys organised two events, a weekend in Sheffield in November 2008 and a cello event in Bolsterstone, Sheffield in March 2009.
The tutors included Bernard Gregor-Smith (cello), Susanne Stanzeleit (violin), Yuko Inoue (viola), Yolande Wrigley (piano), Jonathan Fisher (piano ), Mark Tolson (Alexander tutor), Ben Gregor-Smith (cello), Sue Dumpleton (cello).
Our guest soloist was a local music teacher, Andrea Tweedale, who took the soprano solo in the Villa Lobos octet.
A local pianist, Zinaida Zubova acted as accompanist.
November 2008 This event took place in association with Sheffield Music Academy.
47 participants took part in the tutored sessions. We were able to fund 5 bursaries for students, and, through local support which enabled young local players to attend, to offer lessons from the tutors to 15 Sheffield Music Academy students.
The weekend recital was well attended with an audience of 60.
Four groups of master classes were run throughout the Saturday; they took place concurrently with 2 other untutored groups which met on an informal basis. There was both open tuition in which non-participants could attend as observers, and individual, private lessons.
Six groups were tutored on the Sunday; they took place concurrently with individual lessons.
It also proved possible, with some voluntary help from committee members, to create ensemble groups for applicants who had come without being able to create their own groups.
Individuals had the opportunity to attend Alexander sessions.
A question and answer session was chaired by the tutors.
The Annual General Meeting was held during the event and Barbara Mangles was voted in as treasurer.
March 2009 Cello day. See separate report.
Financial report. See separate report.
In conclusion, this year 4strings88keys has effectively continued to advance education in chamber music playing by the following: a weekend of tuition for chamber music players; a day that concentrated on the needs of the cellist.
In addition, our liaison with Sheffield Music Academy at Bartolome House has both answered our need for an appropriate venue and also benefited those Academy students who were able to attend our events.
We are grateful to the following sponsors for their support, without which the events could not have taken place:
Sheffield Town Trust
Church Burgesses Educational Foundation
Freshgate Trust Foundation
The Friends of 4strings88keys
